Kyiv — September 2025 — Amid ongoing attacks on its energy infrastructure, Ukraine has taken a major step toward bolstering its power resilience. Private energy company DTEK, in partnership with U.S. technology firm Fluence, has brought online a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio totalling 200 MW / 400 MWh, the largest in the country and among the biggest in Eastern Europe.
The deployment consists of six battery sites in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, each site ranging from 20 MW to 50 MW.
One of the primary motivations is to mitigate blackout risks amid recurring infrastructure damage caused by the conflict with Russia. The battery systems are expected to provide stability, backup power, and help smooth out fluctuations in electricity supply.
Composed of Gridstack battery cubes from Fluence, designed for modular, scalable energy storage.
